He told me I would be on 100% commission, wouldn't receive a car allowance, an expense account, health-care expenses, or a corner office. (In fact - my office was in the corner all right - of a stuffy, converted garage!)

It was just me, a cheap vinyl briefcase from Sears, and an ancient black, rotary phone.

My boss heaved the Yellow Pages phonebook up onto my desk and said. ..

"There are your customers, kid - go get 'em!"

(This was back in the Jurassic Selling Period. .. aka COLD CALLING!)

I was on the phone constantly. Calling people I saw in the newspaper, on the media, in the yellow pages - and yet the sales I was generating were pitiful to say the least. I could barely make ends meet. And when I visited customers, I'd have to park my beat-up '78 Plymouth Caravelle bomb, two blocks away from them just so I wouldn't be embarrassed.

Boy was I stressed out!

But I was too proud and too scared to ask anyone for help.

I couldn't even get through a workday without crying. (Has that ever happened to you?)

In fact, each day at 2 pm, I would drive my old car, to a local graveyard, park in front of a headstone, and CRY for a good 15 minutes. Monday through Friday, rain or shine, you'd see me sitting in the green Caravelle, sobbing my heart out. (It was my way of relieving stress, but I quickly ran out of mascara money.)

I Thought The Problem Was ME!

My sales were pitiful and my confidence further waned.

At night, I'd have dreams of my failed future, envisioning myself as a bag lady pushing a stolen shopping cart, wandering the city streets, muttering obscenities about cold calling.

I did this for 6 long, lonely months.

Does that sound pathetic to you?

Good... because IT WAS!

Finally one day, I was desperate enough to ask for some help. I went to a good friend who had done well in sales for many years. She told me something I will never forget.

She pointed her long red fingernail at me and said:

Kim, my dear, there is no direct correlation between BUSY and being SUCCESSFUL."

WHAM!

That comment was like throwing a bucket of ice-cold water on my face. It was EXACTLY what I needed. I began RE-THINKING what I was offering my customers - and why they even bought from me in the first place.

I stepped up to the plate and quit being an order taker. I didn't need to sell like the good old boys any longer. Besides - it wasn't working!!

I spent hours at night in the library, researching successful business leaders and sales people from Benjamin Franklin to Mary Kay. As I was one of the few women in media sales in the city- I was determined to learn BETTER ways of selling - as I didn't want to be like any of the cheesy "Old Boys" Club!

I collected stacks of magazines from around the world (something you will still find in my office today!) and I had filing cabinets EXPLODING with ideas that I wanted to try.

I tested and tried new strategies, fell on my face - got back up again and then tried something different. I made notes of what worked as well as what didn't. I secretly observed people constantly, watching what other salespeople were doing that I liked as well as disliked. I learned SO MUCH through hundreds of hours of intentional professional development and it brought my DEAD JURASSIC SALES back to life!

I learned how to sell my products and services with integrity, expertise and have fun at the same time. I learned how to create strong, powerful relationships with my customers (many of whom are still my friends to this day).

Suddenly - My Sales Were Easy, Fun, and Most Importantly, I Could Be MYSELF!

Within a very short period of time I was making $5,000 commissions at the ripe old age of 22. And when I left the company a few years later - they actually offered me partnership to entice me to stay! (It didn't work!) Years later I ran into that old boss, and he told me Kim - without you - we would never have survived. and more importantly - we would never have been able to sell the business to a HUGE NATIONAL NEWSPAPER CHAIN."

His comment brought tears to my eyes.

I got so good at what I was doing, that a major television network asked me to work for them. After many years of successful selling with them, I went to another national network, and then I REALLY started to blow the doors off! I was making more money than I could ever have dreamed possible - and it was all because I walked a DIFFERENT path on PURPOSE.

This was too good to be true!

Over the years of working in sales and management with two of Canada's largest television networks - I continued to use my techniques and sales tips to sell MILLIONS and become a national award winner. At one point I had a bunch of salesmen have a "chat" with me about how well I was doing - they told me that I was making them look bad and that I should learn to PACE MYSELF! Egad!

Fast forward to a few years later... I knew I had really made it when I was standing on a stage in Toronto - in front of my peers - accepting a national sales award from CBC Television. My heart was pounding and I joked with the crowd about how amazing it was to win an award by selling to clients like national funeral chains! (If only they had known then - that all those hours spent crying in front of a headstone had finally paid off!)

Other women had been coming up to me and saying, "Kim, you are a sales diva! I am so SICK of selling like the guys" - what are 'YOU' doing to be so successful?

I realized I couldn't keep what I was doing a secret from all the other women in sales. I knew they were suffering and slogging through it like I used to. They didn't want to take golf lessons either (hey, golf-wear just isn't that attractive!)

I realized I had to put together a system that was fun, easy, pain-free and helped them learn how to sell and MAKE tons of money just as I was. It was what propelled me to resign from my sales manager position - start my own sales training company and leave all the "I only need a pension" type salespeople" BEHIND!

You know how you always think of the BEST ideas when you are doing something absolutely boring?

I was driving to another city to do a presentation and I could NOT get the previous day out of my head!

I had spoken at an association for women - giving them some sizzling sales tips and advice on how to shake up their sales and have fun at the same time. After the session, I had a HUGE LINE-UP of women - waiting 30 minutes in a line to speak to me! (I felt so bad for them - and their bladders!)

Every single one of these fabulous business women kept asking me...

"Kim - I need your help. How can I hire you?"

At that time - I was only doing work for large corporations and didn't have any public seminars available. Would you believe I actually had to say....

That night I couldn't sleep. I tossed and turned as my brain kept repeating - over and over...
