Let’s begin.

This is the real story of how I became the Sales Diva who has taught and coached so many women entrepreneurs to wild sales success. Many women have told me over the years that they thought I was always a natural born salesperson and that I’ve never found it difficult.

Boy – were they wrong.

First of all, I have to confess – when I first started selling 20 years ago – I HATED IT. I was TERRIBLE at it. I was a young woman who wanted to be in advertising and write commercials. I didn’t want to be a PUSHY SALESPERSON. Ick. But writing jobs were rare and all the writers I knew had to live with 6 smelly roommates just to break even.

It All Started With A “Trashy” Magazine

I was a kid fresh out of college with big ideas, lots of energy, and absolutely NO EXPERIENCE. But a sales job came up with a local weekly magazine and I thought “OK – maybe I’ll give this selling stuff a try.”

I will never forget that job interview - my "future boss" was bald, short, chain-smoking about 50 Camel cigarettes and was wearing a 20 year old pale-green polyester suit with huge pterodactyl wing collars. He told me I would be on 100% commission, wouldn't receive a car allowance, an expense account, health-care expenses, or a corner office. (In fact - my office was in the corner all right - of a stuffy, one-room converted garage! I even cleaned it every week.)

It was just me, a cheap vinyl briefcase from Sears, and an ancient black, rotary phone.

My boss heaved the Yellow Pages phonebook up onto my desk and said. ..

"There are your customers, kid - go get 'em!"

(This was back in the Jurassic Selling Period. .. aka COLD CALLING!)

I was on the phone constantly. Calling people I saw in the newspaper, on the media, in the yellow pages - and yet the sales I was generating were pitiful to say the least. I could barely make ends meet. And when I visited customers, I'd have to park my beat-up '78 Plymouth Caravelle green bomb, two blocks away from them just so I wouldn't be embarrassed.

Frankly, I Was Scared Out Of My Mind

And for good reason.

• I was 100% straight commission – if I didn’t sell – I didn’t eat.
• Potential customers hadn’t even heard of my product (it was so new)
• Many customers thought I was just a cute kid who didn’t know anything about advertising
• I didn’t have any networking connections in the community
• I barely had enough gas money each week to see my clients

And if that wasn’t bad enough, the magazine was in such dire straits to get their distribution numbers up – I actually delivered the magazines door to door to residential areas at night after work!

So you can understand why I was worried.

But I was way too proud and too scared to ask anyone for help.

I couldn't even get through a workday without crying. (Has that ever happened to you?)

In fact, each day at 2 pm, I would drive my old car, to a local graveyard, park in front of a headstone, and CRY for a good 15 minutes. Monday through Friday, rain or shine, you'd see me sitting in the green Caravelle, sobbing my heart out. (It was my way of relieving stress, but I quickly ran out of mascara money.)

I Couldn’t Believe I’d Gone To School For 4 Years To NOW Only Deliver Papers!

I did this for 6 long, lonely months. And I knew something HAD to change.

And it wasn’t long after that I discovered a NEW and powerful method of selling that would transform my sales (and life!) forever…

Fast Forward ...

When I worked for 15 years in sales and management with two of Canada's largest television networks - I continued to use my techniques and sales tips to sell MILLIONS and become a national award winner and one Canada’s youngest sales managers in TV. But I wanted MORE (you know that feeling?)

So, in 2001, I launched my own company The Sales Divas –and left the big-paying, fat corporate job in the dust. (The day I resigned was one of the happiest in my life!)

What Does My Life Look Like Today?

I live in my huge dream home in the country – 3 ½ acres of forest, thousands of birds, hey – I even have a tree house village – it’s perfect for 14 ½ ft high dinner parties. I sit in the hot tub outside and sip wine under the stars. (And thanking my lucky stars as well!)

I have a massive office in my home – complete with a fireplace, chandeliers, wall to wall leopard carpet and a fabulous chaise lounge where I write most of my keynote speeches, seminars and articles. (I’ve also just been asked to write a national column for a magazine)

My business is a combination of on-line and off-line. My 3 Virtual Assistants from across the US and Canada manage all the nitty gritty details of my business. My business is automated and each day sales automatically roll into my email and bank account like clockwork! (I love coming back from the week-end and seeing $30K in on-line sign-ups for my products, coaching and seminars!)

What I love the most? I have freedom to help my sister and 2 nieces (I’m thrilled that they live close-by) and I have the flexibility to help my sis out with everything from babysitting to basketball practice.

I bet you didn’t know this Sales Diva is a gardener too! Yes – I love taking time in the middle of the day to muck around in the garden, and go for a long walk in the trees with my dog. And I’m a breakfast girl – I meet my girlfriends on Friday mornings – and we catch up and brainstorm on everything from where to buy the perfect bra to how to invest in the stock market.

It’s funny – my life goes from one extreme to the other – where I have solitude and then I am on a plane and speaking to thousands!

My business takes me all over the world – from Barbados to Paris (I’m headed there again in just a few months!) and I do keynote presentations for conferences for women in business (at my next gig I’m speaking to 2,500 women)

And I’ve developed a world-wide reputation of being one of the few international sales trainers who specializes in training women. In fact, I’ve even got a major American television network considering a TV proposal!
